Speaking Out

It is in humanity's best interest to speak out about the objectification and dehumanization of women by world religions. In many places in the world, women are raped, beaten, tortured, mutilated, and even killed, among other lesser crimes, just because the victims are women and their holy teachings only have minor sanctions upon these actions, if not support of them. One example of a recurring trait of religious support of these actions is the Islamic support of Female Genital Mutilation. While not a universal practice, and definately not practiced in the United States frequently, "Where it is practiced by Muslims, religion is frequently cited as a reason." (END FGM-Why is it Practiced?). FGM is a major trauma for those who have experienced it, along with being a direct violation of Human Rights. Many victims move to the United States or Europe for surgical procedures to fix the damage done. Raising awareness of FGM would result in, one, a reduction of cases, and two, possible eradication of this horrible act. In terms of the book, Night, speaking out about the Holocaust could have stopped the holocaust sooner, resulting in fewer deaths as a result of the Holocaust. As people just watched their neighbors get shipped off to death camps, nobody protested due to the fear that they would be put down by the Nazis as well. Had enough people gathered to protest, the Holocaust could have been stooped sooner, or possibly avoided entirely. In all, the objectification and dehumanization of women by world religions is a pressing problem, especially when exacerbated by religions.
